Pithoi

Pithoi (singular pithos) is the Greek name for large storage containers.

We now use the term for such containers used among the civilizations that bordered the Mediterranean Sea in the Neolithic, the Bronze Age and the succeeding Iron Age. Pithoi were used for bulk storage, primarily for fluids and grains.

Pithoi could be used for transport, but were also frequently dug into the floors of buildings and could be very large.
