Commodities of Pleasure: Conclusion

Background: (Robinson 1985, Plate 43)

The dataset presented here supports the success of coffee and tobacco in the Ottoman Empire from the late 16th/early 17th century onwards. Although there are difficulties of translating the presence of pipes and coffee cups to social contexts. These preliminary archaeological explorations will hopefully encourage further research into commodities of pleasure in Ottoman Athens.

Future research may include analysis of Ottoman archival sources, as well as osteological examination of Ottoman-period burials.
