The religious buildings in Athens are a good reflection of the development of the city and of the religions that played a role there after Antiquity.
Little information is known about Athens and its architecture in the period between the fall of the Roman empire and the creation of the Kingdom of Greece. However, we can use the relatively well preserved religious buildings of the time to get a grip on the cultural and socio-economic changes over this period.
The development of Athens seems to take place in roughly seven periods, characterised by different buildings and building styles.
