Religion in Ephesus: Conclusion

To conclude, for Ephesus we have observed both the shift from pagan to Christian architecture as well as having looked at the link between pottery useage and religion. While the changes in topography seem significant and seem to indicate clear changes in location and the set up of Ephesus as a city, the distribution of ceramics tells a different story. The similarities found in the different phases examined shows a continuity in material culture, which may indicate that while locations of religious significance changed, much also stayed the same. In the context of graves, their spatial organisation links them directly to Christian burial practises.

Both of these factors go to illustrate universal concepts in human civilisation - while we may make many changes, links with the past will always remain, and remain important. Ephesus is a good example of this, and shows that we never deal with just change or just continuity.
