Vessel Glass from  the Athenian Agora: Introduction

In archaeological research, we try to make use of all types of material culture that can be found in the ground. One of the object types that often shows up in excavations is glass. Glass is a material that has been around for a very long time, and which can be used for many different things.

 

Here, the significance of glass for the excavations in the Agora of Athens will be discussed. We will also look at glass trade in the Mediterranean region, as well as looking at the various uses of glass in Athens and beyond. Glass is a very versatile material with an interesting and complex history, starting in the Fertile Crescent and Egypt.
