The Byzantine House: History of Research
The excavations on the Athenian Agora by the American School for Classical Studies in Athens (ASCSA) started in 1931 and with only a few exceptions, have continued in annual campaigns and are still ongoing.
The excavations in section MM, the area in which the housed under study are located, started in 1936. This section is located in the north-west corner of the Agora, just north of the rail road. In this section three structures dating to the Middle and Late Byzantine periods were discovered.
When first discovered, the houses were measured, drawn, sometimes photographed and described in handwritten journals by the excavators. Currently, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens is releasing these journals and plans online. A wealth of information is now available to those interested in the excavation or the history of Athens in general.

Also, it allows researchers to take another look at the conclusions drawn by the original excavators. In other words, the access to the original data allows current archaeologists to re-investigate the excavated areas.
The small study presented here tried to use the visualisation of these data as a way to analyse a particular set of structures. Because of the way the information is spread out over different types of data, the first step was to bring all the different types of data together.
